f the sexes, and particularly with whatis alleged to be love, it is commonly assumed thatyoung women are sufficiently instructed throughdesultory reading on what is frequently calledthe grand passion. This appellation, grandpassion, truly describes what the novelistsusually give us as love, and is no more educationor preparation of the young person contemplat-ing marriage than the outside of a lot of school-books would be to a student desiring to graduateat a college. The novelist prudently ends hisstory where marriage begins. Up to that timeeverything is very plain sailing for both manand woman, but there, where the necessity forknowledge begins, the novelist discreetly endshis tale. How can he do more ?
