Песня была создана и записана в окончательном голосовом варианте в течение нескольких часов в один из октябрьских дней 2009 года. Адель приехала в студию к Полу Эпуорту в сильно расстроенных чувствах — за день до этого у неё произошёл окончательный болезненный разрыв с бойфрендом, который напоследок пообещал ей скучную и одинокую оставшуюся часть жизни.
