Mark Drela—a [[MIT]] professor of [[aeronautics]] and [[astronautics]]—was the first to demonstrate mathematically the feasibility of the "Dead-Downwind Faster Than The Wind (DDWFTTW)" both for watercraft (using a water turbine to drive the airscrew propeller) and for wheeled vehicles.
