Андердаун, Эмили

Э́мили А́ндердаун (англ. Emily Underdown; 1863―1947) ― английская писательница и поэтесса. Ныне является наиболее известной в основном за свои труды по популяризации ..творчества Данте Алигьери (1265―1321) и по своим произведениям для детей. Многие ее произведения были написаны под псевдонимом Норли Честер (англ. Norley Chester) ― это имя, как представляется, было позаимствовано из названия деревня Норли, графство Чешир, что располагается недалеко от города Честер[1]. Использование псевдонимов было обычной практикой среди женских писателей того времени. Она также иллюстрировала книгу The Pageant of The Year: A Garden Record In Verse.

По словам литературного критика Чосера, Андердаун «…является, пожалуй, самым вдумчивым автором для детей… она проделала сложную работу, и … написала одну из самых продуманных серий книг, которая представляет собой большой интерес с философской и исторической точек зрения»[2].

Она также известна как «поэтесса-фронтовик» Пепо своему произведению «The gifts of war», написанному в годы Первой мировой войны[3].

Эмили Андердаун родилась 28 июля 1863 в Хайер Бротон, Ланкашир, Англия. Ее родителями были лейтенант-полковник Роберт Джордж Андердаун и Лидия Андердаун (урожденная Дакомб). Она была вторым из четырех детей. Не так много известно о ее ранней жизни, кроме того, что она окончила Университетский колледжа в Лондоне в 1898 году. Она жила в Ланкашире и Йоркшире в ранние годы своей жизни, переезхав в Лондон в какой-то момент после 1901 года[4]. Замужем не состояла.

Умерла в Лондоне 5 сентября 1947 года. Ее брат, Герберт Уильям Андердаун (родился 8 июля 1864; Чартерхаус; Кембридж (Пембертон), был известным адвокатом, антикваром и учёным[5].
