English: Remnants of winter’s sea ice floated in the Davis Strait in mid-July 2020. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the icy summer scene on July 15.
The Davis Strait separates Baffin Island, Canada (west) and southeast Greenland (east) and connects the Labrador Sea (Atlantic Ocean) in the south with Baffin Bay to the north. Each winter, frigid temperatures aid the formation of sea ice in the strait. As sunlight lengthens and temperatures warm in spring, sea ice begins to melt. The advance and retreat of the sea ice follows a typical pattern, with maximum extent reached typically in March. Davis Strait is typically ice-free by late July.
