Much depends on hygieniccare, with great persevercnce, to overcome chronic LIFE AND HYGIENE. 185- catarrh; if the patient has constitutional syphilis ortuberculosis, a cure is impossible. Agents to give re-lief and make life more endurable is all that can belooked for. Persons suffering with catarrh as alsocomsumptives would be benefited by going to a warmclimate in the winter.

TREATMENT OF CHRONIC XASAL CATARRH. The treatment of chronic nasal catarrh consists inantisceptics and curatives locally and alteratives andtonics internally. To correct the offensive breath, per-manganate of potass and carbolic acid are both goodagents ; take five grains of permanganate of potass to apint of lukewarm rain water, use with a fountain syringe 3 86 THE PHYSIOLOGICAL LAWS OF or Tiemans Universal douche twice or three timesa day, or a spray, which is much better; this will notonly correct the fcetor, but will also soften the hard crustswhich frequently form and prevent the annoyance ofblowing them away in a forcible manner, which is veryannoying and often painful; it is necessary to keep theulcerated surface free from those scales or scabs, by thefree use of warm salt water, and the remedy just men-tioned ; then use a snuff (F 8) every three to six hours,snuffing into the nostrils or applying with a powderblower.
