If you were to work an en-gine along with one car all the time at avery moderate speed, the repairs and sup-plies would be exceedingly light, but loco-motives are not put in service with a viewof keeping the cost of repairs and suppliesat the lowest possible limit. They are usedto pull the heaviest trains they possiblycan, consequently they are worked as nearas possible to the limit of their capacity. (14) J. D. writes: I. In the Sellers 1876 injectors youwill notice that right below the top studwhich connects the two parts of the in-jector, that there are two holes betweeni/j and 3-16 inch in diameter, one right bythe joint of the two parts, and the other onthe inside of cylinder. This chamberforms a cushion for the combining tubeand prevents it slamming back and forth. 2. Engineer reports Sellers 1876 injectorsworking O. K. while standing, but whenrunning they keep flying off or break-ing. What would likely be the cause oftrouble? Tank was full of water. A.—2, There may be many reasons for this.The holes being plugged, as suggestedabove, would cause the combining tube toslam and might break the jet. Tenderhose may kink when running and be allright standing. A slight leak may de-velop at the joints in running from thestrain between injector at pipes or thetubes may be filled or worn to the criticalpoint, so that the jar breaks the jet.These are by no means the only possiblecauses, but a few of them.
