As a consequence^ bands of Indiansoften raided the settlements, killing the settlers,carrying off women and children, and driving offstock. Among the whites during the days of chivalryit was considered necessary for a young manto win his spurs, so among the wild Indian tribesit was thought necessary for a young man to havea string of scalps at his belt in order to have properstanding in his tribe.
