Биография править
Родился в австралийском Мельбурне. Посещал колледж Джорджа Уотсона при Эдинбургском университете. Также был дантистом.
В 1912 году переехал в Кению и жил в Найроби. Состоял в Восточноафриканском и угандийском обществе естественной истории и стал его почётным секретарём.
С 1930 куратор Кориндонского музея, а с 1938 — его директор.
Описал несколько видов птиц и бабочек. Среди названных в честь Ван Сомерена видов — рыба Labeobarbus somereni.
