Title

There is inconsistency between english and russian version. Actual Island name is Hispaniola and not haiti (how it states in russian version of this article). also according to cia world factbook here what it says about dominican republic:

Location: Caribbean, eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of Haiti

and here is what it says about Haiti (country):

Location: Caribbean, western one-third of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, west of the Dominican Republic

you can also find the same information in encyclopedia britanica. I agree that in russian encyclopedias it is called Haiti but i guess it's erroneous because rest of the world thinks that it's Hispaniola.

I think russian title of the article should be changed to "Island of Hispaniola (aka Island of Haiti)".

Hi Albert. In Russian geographical tradition the island is called Haiti with a historical name of Hispaniola, so we have to follow the guidelines even if they contradict sources in other languages. Cheers. --monfornot 13:50, 15 марта 2009 (UTC)

Wikiexpert1001 11:32, 15 июня 2010 (UTC)It is not the so-called Russian geographical tradition, it was a mistake by the Soviet map publishers, which has been unfortunately carried over and over for decades. This mistake should be corrected. Because the whole world calls this island Hispaniola, while some Russians take the name of one of its states and name the island after it. It is also incorrect because it doesn't allow to differentiate between the Island and the Republic of Haiti. The name should be changed to Hispaniola.

Whatever that was, it is not for Wikipedia to correct. WP by design is a mirror that reflects reliable sources and is not a place to promote ideas. If you are so committed, you can send official requests to Russian authorities — when they change it, the name will be updated here as well. Besides - why do you favor Columbus version over the native one (judging by the text you add)? And please don’t take it personally — I prefer Hispanola version too, but the rules are set. --monfornot^¿? 13:33, 15 июня 2010 (UTC)
