Смит, Джон (ботаник)

Джон Смит (англ. John Smith; 5 октября 1798 — 12 февраля 1888) — английский ботаник, первый куратор Королевского ботанического сада Кью.

Биография

Родился в семье садовника, с детства проявлял интерес к ботанике. В 1822 году устроился на работу в ботанический сад носить горячее камни в теплицы для нагрева воздуха. Позже стал бригадиром теплиц. Вместе с директором Уильямом Гукером занимался переводом сада из частного в публичный. Сфера научных интересов Смита — папоротники. Когда он устроился на работу сад имел 40 видов, а когда уходил на пенсию в коллекции было 1084 папоротника.
