Биография править
Родился в 1941 году.
Получил бакалавра гуманитарных наук в Университете Уэйк-Форест, магистра богословия в Дюкском университете, магистра гуманитарных наук и доктора философии (тема «Текстуальная история Послания к римлянам»[8]) в Йельском университете[9].
В 1970–2014 годах — профессор и затем профессор-эмерит кафедры религиоведения Виргинского университета, где в 1992–2006 годах также являлся заведующим[10].
