Жизнь и творчество править

Джон Каррен родился в Боулдере, штат Колорадо, и вырос в Коннектикуте, в семье профессора физики и учительницы фортепиано из Оклахомы. В Коннектикуте в подростковом возрасте он учился живописи у известного художника-традиционалиста Льва Мешберга. Он поступил в Университет Карнеги-Меллона в Питтсбурге, где получил степень бакалавра искусств в 1984 году, и получил степень магистра искусств в Йельском университете в 1986 году[4].

Первая масштабная выставка работ художника состоялась в Нью-Йорке в 1989 году в арт пространстве White Columns, и представляла собой серию портретов девушек, написанных по фотографиям из университетских альбомов Каррена. В 1990-е годы художник сотрудничал также с журналами «Космополитен» и «Плейбой».

В своих, порой шокирующих сюжетах, Каррен анализирует изменения социальных и сексуальных границ в изобразительном искусстве, возникших с развитием общества и масс-медиа. Художник совмещает классические приемы живописи Северного Ренессанса с современными «глянцевыми» образами из эротических и модных журналов. Проводя параллель с работами мастеров эпохи Возрождения, особенно Лукаса Кранаха Старшего, Каррен критикует феномен «эксклюзивных стандартов» и стереотипов, навязанных обществу, подчеркивая, насколько условны и изменчивы могут быть общепринятые идеалы красоты[5].

Наряду с такими художниками, как Сесили Браун, Дженни Савиль и Джон Сонсини, Каррен возрождает интерес к искусству портрета, дополняя свои работы свойственными американскому китчу грубостью и абсурдом. Созданные им портреты-метафоры зачастую изображают наготу, в которой несовершенство вступает конфликт с одержимостью человека красотой и эстетическим лицемерием. То, что на первый взгляд кажется приукрашенным постановочным портретом, при ближайшем рассмотрении становится искаженным гротеском: части тела деформируются и теряют симметрию, а обнаженные персонажи никак не соответствует идеалам классического эротизма. Скрытое удовольствие от вуайеризма у зрителя сменяется дискомфортом, а после – отрицанием, что заставляет задуматься об изначальных причинах нашего интереса к просмотру картины. Исследование скрытых мотивов и подсознательных интересов человека продолжает быть основой творчества художника. [6]
